A little about Oakland

Welcome to Oakland, California, one of the many cities that make up the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Oakland is challenging to get around on by foot alone but accessible by bike and transit. Our home city is known for its leftist ideals, and visibly marginalized bike community members are as safe here as is possible to currently be within the USA, given the current political climate.

Bike Routes to the city can be found here, though please note that this city made map is a little misleading; some of these bike routes are merely strips of paint on the ground. Do NOT leave your bike or bags unattended. Lock bikes and remove lights, bags, and potentially remove or lock wheels if you don't have through axles or wheel locks.

Most of our activities will be centered near West and Downtown Oakland, though you may be spending thirty or more minutes riding between workshop locations, so plan accordingly! We're not Mexico City in size but Oakland does cover about 78.0 sq miles and we've got hella hills! If you are planning on taking a Bart train into 'the city' (what locals call San Francisco), check time schedules first. Our trains stop running at a certain point at night and run less on the weekend.

If you're looking for good food, amazing activities, and a truly amazing community Oakland is fantastic. We're sure your hosts will have plenty of recommendations, but here's a few from us;

---

West Oakland Ghost Town Brewing for a pint (they have indoor bike parking)

Lake Merritt for relaxing and people watching

Middle Harbor Shoreline Park, for getting up close to the cranes and the ocean

Albany Bulb for some outdoor sculptures to climb on and gravel trails

Joaquin Miller Park for some hills and mountain bike riding you don't need suspension to tackle

The Bay Trail for a more casual ride (But we recommend you stop at the first Alameda bridge and head north instead)

What to Bring

We can provide a bike, but if you can, save us the headache and save yourself the ass ache of a seat that doesn't fit.

Other than that- welcome to Northern California in summer- so pack a sweater, shorts, a bathing suit, sunglasses, a windbreaker, warm socks- who knows, the weather is more unpredictable than our transit funding. You'll likely want a sleeping bag and sleeping mat, depending on arrangements with your host. Camping dinnerware strongly appreciated- save your hosts and our food partners on disposables. We'd also recommend toiletries, or at least chewing gum.

Volunteering

So you want to volunteer? Awesome! To volunteer for pre-bike bike set up, fundraising etc, please email julytenenbaum@proton.me We will be rolling out a sign up sheet for our different roles and needed time slots during the event shortly. Please be aware that travel distances can be large in the bay area , so plan accordingly.
